Columbia University Global MDP Program

CivicActions provides strategic and internet consulting, technology planning, information and visual design, and web services to non-profit and progressive organizations.

Through CIvicActions I have created the information architecture for a number of clients including:

  • Columbia University Global Master’s in Development Practice (http://globalmdp.org/) We engaged with Columbia University to craft a website that was both informational as well as functional. The site acted as a repository for information about all the institutions that are part of the MDP program; and the site is a learning portal for student who participate in the actual program. As the sole information architect on the project I worked with the project team to develop personas, document user journeys and requirements, and draft  site maps and wireframes. The site launched successfully in early 2011.
  • Smithsonian Institution(http://humanorigins.si.edu/) Our team worked with both the Smithsonian Institution and Chett Angier Lewis to create a website that is both attractive and highly educational. The goal of the website was to be a repository for all the information the Smithsonian Institution has about human evolution as well as the online piece of a new museum installation that opened in the spring of 2010. I spent time on-site with the project team in order to develop personas, user journeys, functional requirements, and high-level site maps. In addition to the information architecture tasks I also worked closely with the project manager to create a content strategy to collect, organize, validate, assign, and manage all the content on the website. The site launched successfully in March 2010.

The Coalition of Behavioral Health Agencies, Inc. (http://whereitsatnyc.org) This agency serves a specific audience by providing information and access to resources about healthcare, education, housing, and other social services.  I was the Information Architect on the project and created both the traditional navigation by category (e.g. housing, education, etc.) and a navigation written in first-person statements (e.g. “Where can I find a tutor?”). The faceted searching further helps the site visitor refine what he or she needs.

  • ACLU.TV (http://www.aclu.tv) We worked with the ACLU team to help them better showcase the “Freedom FIles” television series.  I crreated the clickable wireframes to provide a simple and effective organization for both the videos as well as the actions visitors can take to become involved in the issues discussed in the series.
  • Consensus Building Institute (http://www.cbuilding.org) provides training and negotiation services to organizations, governments, and NGOs around the world. We worked with CBI to reorganize their site to make it easier for their students and alumni to find pertinent information.
  • MediaCow (http://www.mediacow.tv) is a network-generating system that makes it easy for social content creators to program and share their own customized, branded video-sharing websites. I created the home page layout.

  • SolveClimate (http://www.solveclimate.org) discusses current climate issues and tacks candidate position on energy, climate change, and legislation. I was the Information Architect on the project and worked closed with the project team to develop the navigation and page layout for the website.
